What Happened to Linux in 1998?

• Linux use grew 200% for the third straight year.
• Several significant products were announced in Linux versions:
• Corel Office Suite
• All the heavy-duty data base programs (DB2, Sybase, Informix, Ingres, Oracle)
• etc.
• IBM adopted the Apache web server.  (Most Internet sites run with Apache.)
• Open Source was such a "hot" topic it almost got boring.
• Netscape (Mozilla)
• IBM (JIKES Java compiler, SecureMailer)
• Many others.
• Intel and Netscape both invested in Red Hat.
• Dell, Compaq, and IBM admitted they will pre-install and support Linux on request.
• Linus Torvalds made the cover of Forbes magazine.
• Rumor says Apple will soon pre-install Linux on the PPC on request.
• In The Trial, Microsoft claimed that the existence of Linux proved there was competition in the software industry!
