What is happening to
the io.com domain?
The io.com domain is being pulled from our servers on July
1st.
This means that we will no longer be able to use the io.com
name for any services that we host. Email accounts, shell
services, and all web pages tied to the io.com domain will be
renamed to prismnet.com as of that date. We cannot keep io.com
any longer.
To our regret, our only option is to assist you in renaming
your io.com services to other domains under our control. This
can be done seamlessly, but a few changes will be required on
your end.
Why is this happening?
Richards & Richards were former majority owners of
PrismNet. They retained ownership of io.com and granted
PrismNet the use of io.com for its customers when they sold
their shares to Jody Badum.
Richards & Richards has notified PrismNet that the
io.com domain has been sold to an unnamed party, PrismNet must
cease using it by 07/01/2011 - July 1st.
How will this affect me?
Your stored mail will not be lost. Shell and web content will
not be moved. There is no migration, password change, username
change or any variety of departure from normal systems
operation.
Nothing is being shut down or reconfigured.
Except: every single thing we have that has io.com in
its domain name will have to be renamed. You will also need to
make changes. In most cases replacing io.com with prismnet.com
will be all you need to do.
What can Prismnet do for
me?
We will rename services to the prismnet.com domain without
interruption. Functionally your web, email, and/or shell
account(s) will remain the same. Unfortunately, the io.com
domain name will be lost. Only the name will change, but...
Names matter - We are here to assist in the task of changing
them and notifying those affected. Do you need an autoresponder
for your email address to let your contacts know? Now might be
a good time to register a domain name of your own for use with
existing accounts.
We can help.
How will this affect homepages?
If you have content in your homepage folder, it will be
viewable from the prismnet.com domain in addition to io.com
until July 1st. After that date, your homepage will be located
at: www.prismnet.com/~username
How will
this affect shell accounts?
The names of our shell servers and all the settings associated
with the servername must be changed. We are not moving
content.
eris.prismnet.com and fnord.prismnet.com will live on, and the
root io.com domain that points to them will be replaced by
prismnet.com
How will this affect
email?
If you have an email address that ends in @io.com, you will no
longer be able to receive mail at that address as of July 1st.
New addresses are available, and they can work in parallel
with your io.com address until July.
As of June 1st we have automatically assigned
<username>@prismnet.com for all <username>@io.com
email accounts. Some usernames may not have been available
(colliding with existing Prismnet customers). If you do not
want a Prismnet.com address...
Please contact us about other available domain
names
Once you are satisfied with a new email address you will
need to change your mail settings. You can change mail servers
immediately, but you must make the change before July 1st. The
changes made are the same across all email clients:
mail.io.com should be replaced with mail.prismnet.com
smtp.io.com should be replaced with smtp.prismnet.com
Don't forget to change your email address and reply-to!
