Course Description

Latin for Teachers II-A is an online training webinar designed for those parents and teachers preparing to teach Latin to students in the dialectic stage of learning (grades 6-9). This interactie course will teach participants the fundamentals of Latin grammar with a special emphasis on how to communicate these same lessons to adolescents. The primary text will be Latin Alive! Book 1, authored by Karen Moore and published by Classical Academic Press. The seminar will also discuss a wide variety of techniques and teaching methods applicable to all. Such techniques will include some of the tradtitional grammar instruction methods as well as the opportunity to introduce oral practice in the classroom; all with the emphasis on learning to read and enjoy Latin. Whether you choose to teach with this text or another, this course will help you better understand the fundamentals of the Latin language and how to teach them to middle and high school students. It is recommended that attendees purchase a copy of the Latin Alive! Book 1. The registration fee is $375 per person or $650 if registering for both sessions (Latin for Teachers II-A and II-B).

Latin for Teachers II-B will be offered for the first time this year as a response to popular demand for a continuation of the LFT seminar series. This webinar will continue to build on the concepts taught in FLT II-A as the group is introduced to complex grammar and higher level reading. The primary text will be Latin Alive! Book 2. This book not only builds on the grammar lessons introduced in book 1, but also continues the historical sequence by allowing students the opportunity to read a vast array of literature adapted from the best authors of the Roman Empire. We will look closely at several of these readings in our class. it is recommended that attendees purchase a copy of Latin Alive! Book 2. The registration fee is $375 per person or $650 if registering for both sessions (Latin for Teachers II-A and II-B).

For the first time this year the Latin for Teachers seminar will make use of modern technology to transform itself into a week long webinar class. After researching various tools and options, we have found a means to make this class more accessible to teachers and parents across the country without losing the quality instruction our attendees have come to expect. From the comfort of your very own home (in your favorite pajamas) you can dial into Karen's class each day for a session of classes on Latin instruction. The webinar features include:

Seminar Instructor

Karen Moore began her study of Latin in seventh grade, and added Greek to her linguistic studies during her college years. Karen graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996, with a B.A. in Classics and a minor in History. Since that time she has taught Latin to students in grades three through twelve through a number of venues, including home school, public school, and classical Christian schools. She is now in her ninth year as the Latin Chair at Grace Academy of Georgetown, a classical Christian School located in the heart of Texas. Karen is the co-author of the Libellus de Historia History Reader Series, published by Classical Academic Press. She is currently writing the third book in the much acclaimed Latin Alive! series. 2009 Seminar Reviews

Karen puts the "classy" in classical Latin education. Both in print
and in person she brings academic rigor, vision, and charm to the
subject. She infuses the conference with well-organized information and
enthusiasm making it an exponentially better experience than trying to
review it all by myself. So glad I attended and so glad that God has led
her to create the interdisciplinary (grammar, history, literature) series
that Latin Alive is.

As a grammar level Latin teacher, the LFT II seminar was not only valuable
for my own command of the Latin language, but also for knowing where my
students will be heading as they continue in their Latin education.

Thank you, Karen, for such clear and helpful instruction in the
Lingua Antiqua. The Lord has truly gifted you as a teacher.
I thank God for you.

Excellent. Since this is my second Latin seminar with you, I knew the
high quality of instruction I would receive!

I am now ready to take my student to the next level in Latin. The Primer
was wonderful, but his is ready to move up in complexity. This seminar
will make that move easier for me!

I would recommend this seminar to anyone ready to move out of elementary
grade Latin. Karen has an excellent understanding of both adult learners
for the seminar and jr. high/high school learners for the material!
Thank you

I loved the entire week. Thank you for using the gifts God has given you
to help others. We have all been blessed by you. I feel much more comfortable
with Latin and feel that I have a deeper understanding of Latin. I can't wait
to utilize what I have learned. Grace Academy is blessed to have you.

I'm new to Latin and this [seminar] allowed me to get a better understanding
of the language, Karen's deliberate methods: giving us why/where things come
from/attaching from what we know to the unknown, helped me to assimilate
information easier than "here is the information - memorize it!"
It filled in many gaps.

I love LAI - it is awesome. I love the variety of activities, readings
from original texts, colloquamur - getting everyone to use the language.
Shared ways to make Latin meaningful to the students. I loved hearing all
the derivatives - they made connections with the vocab words.

2008 Seminar Reviews

This seminar was excellent. While LFC is well written and easy to each,
Karen "filled in the gaps" for me. She gave us a roadmap for where we
are going and strategies for teaching each level. I would recommend
this for any teacher who uses the LFC series.

-Suzanne, Ohio

Karen - You are such a gifted teacher and it's been a pleasure to sit
under you. What excellent teaching tips and ideas you have. I arrived knowing
absolutely nothing about Latin and am leaving with such a better overall
understanding of how Latin is taught and learned. Maybe you'll come
to Hawaii and teach some day.

-Karen
Trinity Christian School, Hawaii

I so appreciated your teaching style, your love for Latin, and appreciation
for classical education. You are an inspiration and would love to have you teach at Trinity.

-Nancy Shaw
Trinity Christian School, Hawaii

The instructor's enthusiasm for her subject came shining through in
all parts of the presentation. It was contagious, and I returned home
with a renewed commitment and zeal to teach with excellence.

Loved your enthusiasm and obvious love for Latin. Enjoyed your digressings -
wonderful tidbits to keep students engaged. You make this "dead" language
come alive.

-Charla Adams
Alpha Omega Academy, Texas

I would recommend this course to anyone that is seeking to implement
the Latin language into your school curriculum. This conference gave me
the confidence and basic knowledge to cast a vision for Latin in my
institution even though I do not have a background in Latin.

-Jason Wood
Secondary School Principal
Trinity Christian School, Hawaii

As a home school mom with no Latin background, the Latin for Children
seminar has been invaluable to me. Karen's knowledge of the subject and
her ability to communicate in a fun lively way has given me the tools
I needed to see the big picture as well as a road map to teaching Latin.

-Jennifer Thronton
Homeschool, Louisiana

How do you say "You Rock!" in Latin?! Thank you for such valuable
information and for helping to equip me as a (homeschool) Latin teacher.
This seminar was valuable in many ways, but mostly that I now feel confident
to learn & teach Latin. Thank you!!

This conference is helpful for anyone who wishes to teach
Primers A-C effectively. Karen is an excellent communicator.

-Martin Winslow
Headmaster
Ozarks Christian Academy, Missouri

Karen is witty, energetic and light-hearted. She has taken a subject
that could be dry, dull, and daunting (if placed in the wrong hands)
and made it exciting, lively, and as user-friendly as possible.

-Amie A.
Homeschool, Texas

Karen Moore is a great speaker, fun to listen to and highly knowledgeable.
I am [coming] away from this seminar feeling confidently equipped to begin
using this curriculum. I was also inspired to stretch myself and go beyond
what I am going to be teaching.

2007 Seminar Reviews

Wow! I learned so much - never had such a knowledgable presenter on any subject matter!
-Homeschool Mom

The Best...Coming into the seminar without any Latin background Mrs. Moore created a desire in me to conquer this language. Also, the appreciation of the language and the importance was greatly ignited in me.
-Bettye Nix

The seminar was intensive - lots to absorb! I definitely feel we got our money's worth! Karen helped me see the big picture - how everything builds and she was also very helpful with how to teach the concepts - the steps along the way. I highly recommend this seminar for elementary Latin teachers.
Your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you for loving Latin and sharing your passion. Would love to see more of your seminars (@ ACCS &/or ACSI)
