I think McDermott's statement about the Gay lifestyle being anachronistic is rather ironic, considering that McDermott's dedicated himself to being a living anarchronism. At one point (according to Art After Midnight) he posed as a 1930s woman living in a tenement slum. Usually he affects the pose of an Edwardian dandy.
