Help-Authoring Options

You do not have to purchase a license for Adobe RoboHelp. You can use Adobe RoboHelp in the computer classroom Northridge 4209. It is open many hours weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. There are a few classes scheduled there; check the calendar on the door.

You do not have to use the current version of Adobe RoboHelp. Much less expensive licenses for earlier versions may be available. However, be wary of unusually inexpensive licenses; they are pirated. Contact your instructor if you are in doubt.

Although this trick may no longer be possible, you can download the 30-day trial of Adobe RoboHelp, and then when that runs out, you can download the 30-day trial of the Technical Communication Suitei, which includes RoboHelp. That gives you over 8 weeks. If you have access to two computers, that will give you a full 16 weeks. (We also hear that if you reinstall the free download before it expires, you can continue using it.)

If you are serious about a career as a technical writer, get Adobe's Technical Communication Suite; it contains RoboHelp and other important tools for technical writers. We hear good things about Academic Superstore, from which can get an academic discount.

Although it may no longer be offered, you can try to get the Adobe academic discount:

  1. Copy and paste this link:

    https://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?store=OLS-EDU&event=displayEduConditions
  2. Click "Yes, I am a higher education student."
  3. Under the title "Adobe Education Store," choose "software."
  4. Choose letters containing "R" and scroll down to find RoboHelp.

Remember: A RoboHelp purchase can always be used as an educational expense on your taxes.
