Ancestors' Tale

An old man held a sugar spoon
its bowl a scallop; in Alabama,
in the War between the States,
the family told their house slave
to bury all the silver.

Then the Union army came.

The soldiers, in their zeal to loot
beat the slave, who died
for silence    though
the sugar spoon, forgotten
in its bowl, survived.
