Power Tools for Technical Communication: Highlighting

In this lab, you practice creating character styles—those shortcuts for formatting words and phrases provided by most word-processing applications.
  1. Copy the unformatted text below, and paste it into your preferred word-processing software.
  2. Review the techniques for creating character styles in Chapter 12 of Power Tools of Technical Communication.
  3. Create the following character styles:
    • command — bold, for anything you click.
    • user_text — Courier New, for anything users must type in.
    • key_term — italics, for important terms at the their point of definition.
    • runin_head — bold and blue, for run-in headings.
  4. Highlight the text using these character styles. Also create the numbered lists as shown in the model.
  5. Put your name, Highlighting: Character Styles, and the date on this document, and print it out for your instructor.

In the model, notice that items readers must click or select are bolded; names of fields and dialog boxes use initial caps but are not highlighted; italics is used for simple emphasis of a word where it is defined; and text that readers must type is shown in Courier New:

Now here's the text. Just copy it straight off the screen here, and paste it into your preferred software. Remember to delete the numbers for the numbered-list items, and reformat them using your preferred software:
