Hello, editors! I'm in the mood to change up what we are doing this final two weeks. As important as it is to an editor's career, I've never felt comfortable with the style guide unit and project in this course. I'm wanting to remove it from the plan.

Instead, let's do our last practice edit (espresso) this week Nov. 30, and then move edit quiz 3 which will include a style sheet AND an edit summary to Dec. 10.

For our last edit meeting, Dec. 6, we will go over how to write the edit summary. You'll get full credit in the gradebook for attending the meeting and/or sending me a decent edit summary of "What Is Open-Heart Surgery?" We'll go over that infamous document Dec. 6. And just a hint: few or no grammar/punctuation/usage errors in that document. You want to consider the appropriateness of the content to the target audience.

And tell the doctor he sucks!

Any objections to this new plan? -- David

Hello, all. I had to spend a couple of days in the hospital so that put me behind. I'm okay now; I'll catch up with your work by this coming Wed.

I was not able to set up the edit summary assignment properly for you so let's just discuss that one next week.

Lotsa people freaked out over the type code assignment. I think I need to cover all the possibilities in the unit. Let's just work each of us one on one to get that markup correct. I'll do better.

For this short week:

Read and take the quizzes on

Rude 17 and 18
Page design

I will post the RSS edit by Wed. evening.

As you may have noticed, I moved Editing Quiz 2 to be due end of this week, Nov. 19

Lots going on this week:

Read Rude 14, 15, and 16 -- and take the quizzes
Study code markup and send me the practice markup
Edit the awful, terrible kindergarten document with an eye toward "comprehensive" editing. That'll be Wed. night!

Hey! No live edit meeting Nov. 22! I'll record it! It'll go well with turkey!

do enjoy the class meetings. It helps me pick up things that I would otherwise miss. See you guys next

Hello, editors! This week:

* On Wed night, we edit the Dropbox file. I have wanted to set up a unit on "usability editing," in which we assess how good instructions are on guiding us through a procedure. How about seeing if you can follow the Dropbox instructions and we discuss on Wed. night?

* Read Rude 12 and 23 and take the quizzes. Thanks, KG, for alerting me to those incorrect links. All fixed now.

* Quiz 3 seems a bit too soon. What do you think? I can put it off another week, I think.

Hello, editors! This week:

Mail merge live edit Wed. night. Let's do another one where each of us takes a
turn at citing an error problem.

Also, read and take the quizzes on chapters 11 and 13.

We need to get serious about the stylesheets. Hard to fit that in with the edit
itself. There is an example for the eBay edit:

I'm relying on last fall's recording. Last fall, I was concerned about low scores.

This fall, scores were almost all good. I will gladly take a wee bit of credit for this: The things-to-look-for idea came to me part way through last fall.

I am receiving your edit quiz 1 and will review and return them this week. All my classes are turning in projects so it's going to be a helluva week!

We will edit the ebay text this week. Just found out I had last year's edit out there. Fixed that!

Big surprise this week. We are going to experiment with Editors' Circle. I'll call on individuals to tell us what the next change is in the ebay document. So you better edit that thing before class! In the words of Pat Sayjack, "you'll have 10 seconds...."

Also this week:

Rude chapters 9 and 10 and the quizzes
MS Style unit: it'll be like the usage unit; MS Technical Style is available online through the ACC library (link provided).

Wow! Did I goof up! For this week's edit, I posted the completed edit (tablet recommendation). I need to un-edit it; I'll get it back out there Monday a.m. I set it up very carefully so that it would mirror a lot of what you'll see on Edit Quiz 1 (which will be due Oct. 22).

So we will meet Wed night live and do the un-edited tablet recommendation document.

Also this week Rude 6, 7, and 8 and the quizzes.

See you Wed. night. -- David

I REALLY got mixed up on a capitalization issue Wed. night. You CAN assume an
uppercase or lowercase letter will be interpreted/treated as such by others in the
publishing process. In my frail defense, I have resigned from my 12-year
department chair post -- turned out to be a very emotional thing. But I'm likely to
be much clearer-headed in the future!

I could not get the link to Garner's writing tips. But here is his post on segue/segway:

segue is a noun (meaning “a seamless transition”) and an intransitive verb (meaning “to transition smoothly”). (It’s also a transitive verb, but only in music.) The misspelling *segway (except in the trademarked company name) is particularly embarrassing—e.g.:

“[Barack Obama] applauded the work of junior Joe Pearson, of Barrington, who works under lead biodiesel research Professor Ihab Farag. It was a good segway [read segue] to Obama’s own proposal that would reduce the amount of carbon in the fuel Americans pump into their tanks.” “Obama, in Nashua, Pledges to Get U.S. Out of War,” Union Leader (Manchester, N.H.), 21 Apr. 2007, at A2.

“For almost 30 years, Larry Monroe has been spinning records and CDs on KUT-FM radio . . . . Monroe’s signature is the ‘segway’ [read segue]. He takes pride in piecing together creative set lists in which the songs are united by theme, a condition of heart or climate, or an artist’s affinity for a single word in a refrain.” Brad Buchholz, “Sharing the Language of Dylan,” Austin Am.-Statesman, 13 Sept. 2007, at E1.

Language-Change Index
*segway for segue: Stage 1
Current ratio in books (segue vs. *segway): 68:1

I could not access the original e-mail, but the question is pretty easy to answer.

The two words may sound the same, but they have completely different meanings.

• "Segue" is an actual word that refers to a transition, most often in music. In the radio
business, the fade from one song to the next song or other sound is commonly referred to
as a "segue." I think is safe to assume that it is a French word that has been adapted and
included in English (at least American English) parlance.

• "Segway" is a trademark for those cool, two-wheeled, self-balancing transportation
devices. "Segway" is also the trade name for the company that designs and builds them.
The distinction between a trademark and a trade name is beyond the scope of this class, but
clearly "segway" has nothing to do with musical transitions. Perhaps, however, the
innovators of the device saw it as a transition from traditional transportation to more
modern form of transportation requiring less mobility and input from the user. I believe that
the "Segway" device started (and a version of the product is still manufactured) as a means
of transportation for disabled persons, kind of like a wheelchair that can be controlled by
movement of the upper body or head.

* First, one of our fine colleague pointed out that I had the chapter number for "Management" wrong. Fixed it! You may need to refresh/reload your browser. You may need to refresh/reload your browser. (Chapter 3 and 24 and quizzes)

* I know some of you still have not received Rude 4/e. No problem catching up with the quizzes. The units in the course do not match up directly with the chapter assignments.

* This week we have two stupid edits (first aid and warning) -- obvious errors (I hope). Our focus will be hardcopy markup. I'll show you how those two edits are marked up. If you have access to a scanner, you can scan and send me your markup (either before or after). It may be a nearly obsolete skills, but if you go for a writing/editing job, you may have to do an editing text which might require hardcopy markup.

If any help I've been a fog all week with so much to do my head has been spinning. :)

When I click on "Completed Edits," the Adobe Connect screen opens, with the last few chat comments from last night. How do I locate the video? Or, will the edited document be uploaded as a pdf for reference? TIA, Anna

I will put the edited document in Completed Edits.

As for the edit log, just write the name of the document, date of edit, approx. time
it took you to edit, say 3 pages, how many errors you made. Simple!

Web Connect will as you for a password: just type some identifiable part of your name
Web Connect will also ask you either to allow it to install some software or to run Flash. Allow that.

See you at 6:30!
