Well! We'll get back into our meeting thing this coming Thurs. night, whereupon (like that word!) we will edit the tablet document and create a style sheet for it. Don't forget to send me YOUR edit of this document before our meeting.

In addition, you'll have Edit Quiz 1 one due Oct .21

I have cleverly designed our Thurs edit to touch upon all the problems you will need to watch for in the edit quiz. In fact, I list the problems to watch for in both! Clever me!

Also, this week read and take the quizzes on the textbooks chapters 6, 7, 8. (I'm okay with your taking another week on these quizzes in deference to the edit quiz.)

I decided that the current nitrogen dioxide edit is a No Fun Edit and that it would be just as good for me to do a recording and have you watch it and tell me what I missed. (I do need an editor.)

By the way, I had not intended to require hardcopy markup on this edit. That's left over from when I did this course in the classroom. Just practice using Track Changes.

Hey, editors! Here's the deal for this week:

* Do the usage unit: have my little program pick your usage item, research it using Bryan Garner's Modern American Usage available through the online ACC library, then post your explanation.

* Do the NO2 edit and send it to me before Thursday night.

* Read and take the quizzes for Rude 4 and 5. Let me know if you still do not have the textbook.

* If you do know how to use Track Changes in Word, click the Electronic editing: tutorials link.

I learned markup working in newsrooms. I began when there was still pasteup on a layout sheet sent out for printing. It is computerized. Newsroom staffs shrunk. Paywalls were put up in a futile attempt to prevent further loss of money. I say futile because people disliking the payway can either delete the cookie triggering it or go to a free site like the tv stations.

Subject: ETWR 2379 ETWR 2379/POFT 1007: why hardcopy markup?
Here's what *my* says (at some length). I like his analogies:

Well, there are many things that are less essential than they used to be, but I consider traditional editorial/proofing markup sort of like learning how to do math even though you have a calculator. My niece is planning to be an architect, and I am pleased she has to take manual drafting.

A couple quick points:
- I asked someone who was a hiring and vendor manager at a technical press and now works with a marketing content firm. She says it is frustrating when people don't bother to learn basic markup because it is still used frequently enough that it slows people down if they don't know it, and you never know what your client prefers or other vendors use. Plus there are no consistent standards about PDF markup, so it is better to know it.

- Personally, I don't think markup is that hard to learn, but I am constantly surprised when young production folks don't understand it. I cannot assume that people I am working with will understand it, but most professionals who have been at it for a while still do. In my opinion, not learning it is like ignoring printer terminology because Word calls it something else. The main proofing marks fit into a one-page table (see CMS or Words into Type), and CMS describes the usage of most in a few pages. There are others marks, of course, some more familiar than others. Same with terminology: I used "track up" and "track down" in pages of your book, for example, which is terminology from my early years and may be house-specific. My "track up" in one case is probably more commonly known as "run in," but pros typically get it. I guess I would ask why someone would not want to fully understand their craft, especially if they want to be able to step into any situation.

CMS table: https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/help-tools/proofreading-marks.html
Another decent one: http://www.biomedicaleditor.com/support-files/proofreadingmarks.pdf

For aspiring editors, I would paraphrase Socrates and say "Know your craft." So, I would buy a used copy of Pocket Pal from International Paper, even though they haven't updated it for a decade. Heck, I'd look around for a copy of Frank Romano's long out-of-print book on printing and other classics like Tufte x3, Spiekermann's Stop Stealing Sheep, and The Book of Fine Paper, just to understand where we've been. Go to the Guttenberg Museum in Mainz, and stream How to Make a Book with Steidl on Amazon. Watch a couple YouTube videos on letterpress (a great example of a technology that has resurged). Know your craft.

Signed,

Cranky (not so) old man

I can just imagine an editing test for a writing or editing job requiring them to use that style.

Hello, fellow editors! Have you started editing graffiti yet? Maybe ACC can arrange for Editor Therapy.

This week:

Go through those "bootcamp" exercises, and remember that stuff.

Be sure and read about house style.

Do the two ridiculously simple edits for Thurs. and send to me before Thurs., on which night we will get an introduction to standard hardcopy markup, a skill that you may need on an employment test edit someday.

Read and take the quizzes on chapters 3 and 24.

My computer won't let me get past the Adobe Flash Player install. I've downloaded it about 5 times
now and still cannot get past that window. My husband is an IT guy, so when he gets home I'll have
him look at it. I guess I'll just watch the recording tomorrow and join y'all next week. Sorry.

See you tonight 6:30. I'll send the link to the online meeting location this afternoon. -- David

Either day works fine for me. This week, Thursday -may- be better by a fraction. This is mostly
because my husband is currently in the hospital and I am unsure when he will be released (my hopes
are for today). I can only hope the actual time-frame will not land around 6:30-7:00 on either day in
needing to actually pick him up/bring him home. If it does end up looking like it may conflict with that,
I will be in contact with you ASAP David.

From:
Subject: ETWR 2379 ETWR 2379/POFT 1007: interesting question
Marcy asked:

Would it be commonplace to "fix" run-on sentences or to ask the writer to "clean up" the sentence? I also made comments about sources/citations and to "expand" on some information. However, after looking at the articles on Wired I saw none included where they got there information and the articles were to the point and succinct. I am leaving my comments in there none the less because these are questions I would have as a reader and would hope that for this copy edit a little more information would be provided.

My reply:

Interesting comments, Marcy. As an editor, unless you are expected to do so, you don't rewrite a document for the writer. However, you are expected to fix copyedit-type errors. The gray area is wordy unclear sentences -- wordsmithing. As you say, you gotta know your audience -- in this case, the writer and moreover the organization and its expectations.

Quite often in this course, people in those want to rewrite "the whole damn thing." Nope! In your edit summary, in your writer-editor meeting, or in circled comments in the margin, you can point out excessive wordiness or lack of clarity -- in some tactful way.

How's that? -- David
