FrameMaker Cross-References

When you complete these tasks, send the FrameMaker file to your instructor. Go to Lorem ipsum if you need "dummy text."

Note: When you send FrameMaker practice files, attach them individually to your e-mail (not a zip). Name then in such a way that I can easily recognize which practice item they correspond to.

Practice Tasks

  1. Create two FrameMaker documents of about 4 pages each, and include a heading 1 on each page along with a title on page 1 in both documents. Force the second document to continue the page numbering of the first document (Format > Document > Numbering > Page).

Note: The only way to get the page numbering to continue from the first file is to put both files into a .book and use the Numbering setting for the two files in the .book

  2. On page 1 of the first document, create a cross-reference to a heading on another page within the same FrameMaker document. The cross-reference should show just the page number (as in page 23).
  3. Also on page 1, create another cross-reference to a heading on another page within the same FrameMaker document, but in this case include both the text of the heading as well as the page number in the cross-reference. Enclose the heading text within quotation marks (as in See "Configuration" on page 23).
  4. Create a custom cross-reference format that displays only the text of the heading that is cross-referenced. Use that custom cross-reference format somewhere in the document.
  5. In the first FrameMaker document, insert a cross-reference marker in the middle of a paragraph on the last page. On the first page of this document, create a page-number-only cross-reference to that marker.
  6. In the first document, create a heading-and-page cross-reference to a heading in the second document.
  7. On the second page in the first document, create a cross-reference to heading in the second document, other than one on the first page of the second document. Make the cross-reference display the chapter title and the page number.
  8. In the second FrameMaker document, insert a cross-reference marker in the middle of a paragraph on the second page. Back on the third page of the first document, create a cross-reference to that marker in the second document. Make the cross-reference display the chapter title and the page number.
  9. In both documents, add enough dummy text so that the page numbers in the cross-reference must change. They will not update automatically; instead you must click Update References.
