Issue #12, March '86: "Final Crisis"

Wolfman, Pérez, Ordway
Double-Sized Issue

Plot Summary: On Earth, millions of shadow demons strike and begin killing. The assembled sorcerers prepare a spell to remove them, while the dozen mightiest heroes travel to the Anti-Monitor's world to destroy him. Even with careful planning, help from Darkseid himself, and the sacrifice of Superman I and Superboy Prime, they barely succeed. Several truths about the new universe are revealed, and we end with only the Psycho-Pirate remembering what came before.

12.10.2: Black Condor, Air Wave II, Blue Devil, Judomaster. That appears to be Starman II in the background, but he's dead at this point [shrug]. (It's also been suggested it might be a slightly-modified Captain America.)

12.12.9: Note Firehawk behind Firestorm.

12.13.8: That's Kid Flash, crashing the party.

12.15.2: Doll Man, Hawk, Dove, Human Bomb, Vixen.

12.15.5: The Inferior 5 are behind Lois.

12.15.8: Dove dies.

12.16.2: Johnny Thunder I.

12.16.4: Zatanna, Zatara, Black Bison.

12.16.5: Wizard, Felix Faust, Enchantress.

12.18.2-3: See 8.22.7.

12.19.1: Psycho-Pirate II has gone completely over the edge.

12.21.1: Much the same heroes from 12.10.3. Tritonis' destruction has since been ignored - it never happened.

12.21.8: Lori Lemaris' death was also ignored away, so I'm not counting it.

12.22-23.1: Green Arrow I dies.

12.22-23.6: Wildcat II, Son of Vulcan, Cyborg, Vigilante.

12.22-23.7: Prince Ra-Man dies.

12.22-23.8: The Warlord.

12.22-23.9: Clayface II dies. The Bug-Eyed Bandit dies. (Pérez sys that he killed the Bandit because "...I couldn't stand being in a company that would print [him]."

12.22-23.18: The Ten-Eyed Man dies. (Killed by Pérez for similar reasons.)

12.22-23.24: Kole dies. Huntress II dies. Robin I dies.

12.24.8: Behind Lois are Vigilante I and Owlwoman.

12.24.16: Sunburst's death here was later ignored/forgotten.

12.24.17: The Challs with Cave Carson and his team.

12.25-27: The heroes' plan here is well-conceived and well-executed - something we should see more of in comics.

12.28.3: It's always emotion with PP2.

12.28.9: Note the little plot-device hanging over there to the right.

12.29.11: Wonder Woman I contemplates her future as a "non-person".

12.30.5: Hey, Monny, if all else fails, lower your standards.

12.30.8: Wonder Woman II isn't quite killed here, as we'll see later.

12.31.6: What exactly does Lady Quark have left to live for, that Superboy Prime doesn't?

12.33.6: Note Desaad to the upper right.

12.36.8: Supergirl killed him, the Spectre killed him, Doctor Light killed him, Superman I killed him, Darkseid killed him - and he's still coming.

12.37.3: The Anti-Monitor dies.

12.38
(Clipped from 12.38.)

12.38.14: Alexander Luthor, Superboy Prime, Lois Lane-Kent, and Superman I leave our universe forever. Quoting from WW14.4: "[Luthor IV's] power was eliminated upon opening the final door into that unknown limbo, and that door can never be reopened without the complete and utter destruction of all life everywhere."

12.39.2: Harbinger begins composing her History of the Universe.

12.39.15: There's no real explanation of how Wonder Woman I's husband, Steve Trevor, survived the merging of the Earths.

12.40.1: Batman II, Robin III, Mary Marvel, and Batgirl stand over where Robin I, Huntress II, and Kole fell.

12.40.3: Superman II and Power Girl remember Supergirl and (presumably) Superman I and Superboy Prime.

12.40.4: Doctor Light II mourns Sunburst.

12.40.5: The Teen Titans bury Dove.

12.40.6: Wildcat II reads about Green Arrow I, Wildcat I, and Hawkman I.

12.40.11: Wally West becomes Flash III.

12.41.1: Since Kamandi's future no longer exists, we learn here that he becomes Tommy Tomorrow.

12.42: ...And the Psycho-Pirate gibbers in his cell at Arkham. "I'm the only one left who remembers the infinite Earths. You see, I know the truth. I remember all that happened, and I'm not going to forget. Worlds lived, worlds died. Nothing will ever be the same. But those were great days for me... I had a good friend in the good old days, really. He was the Anti-Monitor. He was going to give me a world to rule. Now he's gone, too. But that's okay with me. You see, I like to remember the past because those were better times than now. I mean, I'd rather live in the past than today, wouldn't you? I mean, nothing's ever certain anymore. Nothing's ever predictable like it used to be. These days... y-you just never know who's going to die... and who's going to live."

12.42.15: "Not the end; the beginning of the future."
